After serving 6 years as a pilot in the U. S. Air Force attended Columbia University in New York and the New York School of Finance. Joined the investment banking firm of Hornblower, Weeks, Hemphill & Noyes in New York City. Transferred to E. F. Hutton & Company in 1973 and moved back to Charlotte. Transferred to PaineWebber Group in 1979 which merged with Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS Financial Services) in 2000. Retired in 2003 and enjoy an interest in history, flying, classic cars, reading and writing. Our summer home retreat for the last 40 years has been Tybee Island, Ga.

School Story:

There was never be a nicer group of students than those who were in the EMHS - Class of 1960.

Most noteworthy about the school? Its Honor System...and Mr. Pittman.

Most influential teacher? Mrs. Parker

Favorite course at school? Miss Foster's English class.

Most fun remembered? Cutting up in class with Susan Sparrow and hanging out with my pal Bob Dowdy.

Most memorable experience? Sitting behind Frances Faulk in Miss Smith's World History class.

I first met Betty when her family moved across the street from us.  We were about 13 years old at the time and she came over to our house to introduce herself.  I remember that day like it was yesterday and we remained friends up until the very end. 

 

My wife and I went to see Betty and her husband Dale in Boone a couple of times and the last time I spoke to her was about three weeks before her death.  Her disposition was very upbeat and we spent about an hour laughing about growing up in Charlotte in the 1950s, playing croquet a lot in our front yard. . . and even skipping school together one day while seniors at EMHS.  She was a member of the National Honor Society so she didn't caught but I did. . . with no regrets.  Even though she knew her time was rapidly coming to a close she told me not to worry because she had a wonderful life. . . with no regrets.

 

I'll never forget Betty and will always miss her.
